If you have received the crazy email on bananas and "necrotizing faciitis" below, please ignore it.
I do believe this kind of thing is done by people who think they are smart and probably bet each other that they could create a frenzy online. Just in case it has frightened you, I have checked it out and this is what I have found;

Firstly - It is impossible to infect a banana with a "flesh-eating bacteria"
Secondly - If they were infected by any bacteria the banana would rot and be soft and black - no one eats those bananas anyway!
Thirdly - Bacteria cannot graft themselves to anything let alone the skin of a banana
Fourthly - The Monkey population has not been decimated in the area, and if it was the case, it would front page news, not a badly written email.
Fifthly - I have checked this out.. no bananas are exported from South Africa, Giet Joubert from the banana association tells me that our Sub Tropical Climate is not ideal and we cannot compete with bananas grown in tropical areas.
Sixthly - Many types of bacteria can cause necrotizing fasciitis (e.g., Group A streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes), Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio vulnificus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides fragilis). Such infections are more likely to occur in people with compromised immune systems.
Over 70% of cases are recorded in patients with one of the following clinical situations: immunosuppression, diabetes, alcoholism/drug abuse, malignancies, and chronic systemic diseases. So which of these bacteria is it? There is no bacteria known as necrotizing fasciitis
Seventh - Burning your own flesh is completely crazy!
Eighth - the FDA  (Food & Drug Administration) would not issue a country-wide warning as it is a USA based organization, which has nothing to do with South Africa. Even if this was an American problem, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) would be the one involved.
Ninth - the telephone number given is never answered - so clearly this is yet another sign of a cruel hoax.

Check out these scare stories and follow them up with research, before you send them to all and sundry. Sociopathic (without a conscience) people, who love playing games with other people's lives make up this kind of thing for kicks. They get their kicks each time these emails are sent on.

I say cruel as many people depend on bananas for most of their nutrition, especially young children. Bananas are considered a complete food, in fact the MOST complete of all foods.

And just to prove that I am disregarding this nonsense, I have dried some bananas and am making them available to people like myself, who do not like the texture of bananas. I prefer them dried and if you would like some get them from our online shop at www.naturalway.co.za.

The offending email is at the end of this letter, but first my favourite ( and I do not even like bananas - but all my family does) banana recipes;

Banana Milk
In place of milk on cereal like our Wheat-free muesli we add this banana milk. It is way more nutritious and beneficial than cows or other milk.
Blend a half to 1 ripe banana with a half to 1 cup of clean water until smooth
Pour over cereal and enjoy!
Optional - add honey or Propeas (protein from peas with real vanilla) to taste

Crust for tart or bake as cookies
2 cups Mary-Ann's Wheat free muesli
1 ripe banana
Blend until thick and smooth and press into pie dish or place spoonfuls on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes at 180oC

Banana Ice-cream
Freeze, peeled ripe bananas on a flat tray or dish. When frozen place in freezer bag until needed in the freezer.
To make ice-cream, simply blend well until smooth and creamy
Optional - Add honey and Propeas

Bananas

When asked by a medical doctor, what, in his opinion, was the healthiest food to eat, Dr. Louis Meiring (a chemical pathologist) answered, “a ripe banana”. Dr. Meiring maintains that ripe bananas leave the best chemical residue and balance in the blood stream.

Firstly what is a ripe banana?
It must have freckles on the skin,. This indicates that the starch in the banana has dextrinized, or made it easy to digest. It must peel easily. The skin almost falls off.
The flesh is still firm but there is no bitter or dry after taste. Eating a banana that is not properly ripe can result in digestive discomfort and or mucous problems.

Bananas also leave the right alkaline residue in the blood stream and contain  the following nutrients:

For each 100g of banana there is about,
Protein 1.3g                                                   Cholesterol 0
Fat 0.3g                                                          Calcium 2mg
Iron 0.6mg                                                      Magnesium 21 mg
Phosphorus 20 mg                                         Potassium 241 mg
Sodium 1 mg                                                  Chloride 79 mg
Zinc 0.23 mg                                                 Copper 0.05 mg
Selenium 1.1 ug (micrograms)                       Chromium 7.5 ug
Manganese 310 ug                                         Vitamin A16 ugRe
Caretenoids 95 ug                                           Vit. E 0.27
B1 0.03 mg
B2 0.02
B3 0.7
B6 0.3
Folate ug 19
Pantothenic acid 0.26
Biotin 2.6
Vit C 12

These are just the known nutrients, there are many unknown phytonutrients.

Bananas are picked green and either allowed to ripen slowly as they give off their own Ethylene gas or they are ripened quickly in rooms of ethylene gas. There is no known possible side effect or danger as the gas is the same as the bananas give off naturally. Tree-ripened bananas are said to be NOT as sweet as those picked green. Bananas left on the tree to ripen tend to split and are subject to infestation.

Store ripe bananas in the fridge or peel and freeze. Ripen in a warm place. To ripen quickly, place in a brown paper bag. The natural gas will be trapped and ripen the bananas quicker.

Eat them on their own or freeze when very ripe (remove the skins first) and add to fruit shakes or make banana ice-cream. See Recipe books 1 & 2 for more ideas..

Hi all not to sure how true this is but please be careful.
Please don't eat bananas for the next 3 weeks

Several deliveries of bananas from uvongo kwa-zulu natal south Africa have been infected with necrotizing fasciitis, otherwise known as flesh eating bacteria. Recently this disease has decimated the monkey population in the south coast. We are now just learning that the disease has been able to graft itself to the skin of fruits in the region, most notably the banana which is one of south Africa’s largest exports. Until this finding scientists were not sure how the infection was being transmitted. It is advised not to purchase bananas for the next three weeks!!! If you have eaten a banana in the last 2-3 days and come down with a fever followed by a skin infection seek MEDICAL ATTENTION!!!

The skin infection from necrotizing fasciitis is very painful and eats two to three centimetres of flesh per hour. Amputation is likely, death is possible.. If you are more than an hour from a medical center burning the flesh ahead of the infected area is advised to help slow the spread of the infection. The FDA has been reluctant to issue a country wide warning because of fear of a nationwide panic. They have secretly admitted that they feel upwards of 15,000 South Africans will be affected by this but that these are" Acceptable numbers". Please forward this to as many of people you care about as possible as we do not feel 15,000 people is an acceptable number.
