VUVUZELA  YOUR   SAFETY

11 June 2010.

You hear the sound of South Africa’s secret weapon, the Vuvuzela

As you approach the gate to the factory / mine / offices, you see a guard of honour on either side of the walk way - all your H&S Reps. Each one “ukufutha eVuvuzela”, a beaded safety Vuvuzela.

On the flags which hang from each Vuvuzela, are the cardinal / golden / platinum / life saving rules of your company.

You are given a flyer with a safety message and a set of disposable ear plugs.

The safety message deals with the need to wear and care for your PPE or a call for you to keep your eye on the safety ball during the World Cup.

You can repeat this safety drive for all Bafana Bafana games.

Before you discard this idea as a waste of time, consider some of the benefits:

1.      This is an easy, very visible and audible way of tapping into the World Cup ‘feva’

2.      You elevate your H&S Reps to the status of safety ambassadors

3.      You make sure that safety is kept top of mind, despite of all the excitement

4.      You support your local craftsmen, if you make use of beaded Vuvuzelas

5.      You lay the ground work for sustaining the World Cup experience for future safety launches / celebrations / events.

The last point has huge potential for drawing attention to your safety drives. Post World Cup, you could run a safety program, using the Vuvuzela to launch the activities. Create your own Safety Calendar with special days and weeks like Seat belt week, Tripping Hazard day, Safety glasses day, Hand Gloves week, Hygiene week, Home safety week, Safety sign day, Hand tools day, PPE day etc. Obviously, this needs to be advertised well with suitable briefing, instructions and some supporting events to 'commemorate' the special day! The idea is to get everyone in your company to focus on the issue at hand and to make it visible to all.

To engage your safety team even more in the beat of the World Cup, give me a call or email eKhuluma at pa2JHT@iburst.co.za  or jurgen@anda.co.za.  I will put you in touch with the ‘Silent Conductor’ for teamwork and harmony.
