Do you use your e-mail inbox 

as a filing cabinet ?

Ok, you are not alone , many users are starting to use their e-mail inboxes as the primary storage for their important documents, in fact in most businesses , up to 70% of the critical business correspondence is in the Businesses e-mail system .

Without getting too technical , we strongly recommend that you chat to your IT support guy about your e-mail folders, most small businesses make use of POP or IMAP e-mail . IMAP e-mail performs a bit slower , and requires Outlook 2007 or preferably Outlook 2010 to work properly , but will provide a great platform for sharing mail across devices ( IPAD, Notebook, Cell Phone) or other users ( your secretary ...if you still use one of those ). If you are using POP and dont want to move from POP , you need to ensure that your 'PST File' is properly backed up, or you coudl lose all of your e-mail if your notebook PC is lost or stolen, or even through data corruption .

For Apple users - Apple offers a fantastic service via their Mobile Me service that will help you track your device , we recently were able to remind one of our clients where he left his IPAD , through this service ....yes true story , one of our clients misplaced his IPAD , and our Helpdesk guys were able to easily play 'detective' through the mobile me service . To rent or not to rent ?

Many of our clients are opting to rent their new notebooks instead of purchasing them . The rental option allows , especially the small and medium business owner to focus their capital use in areas of their business that offer a better return ( Salaries, stock etc ) and with the ability to claim the monthly premiums as a taxable expense , the differential in premium VS cash payment is not that large. The fact is that ICT equipment depreciates in value, holding this equipment as an asset ,tying up cash on new purchases or even delaying the buying decision for cash flow reasons may compromise your businesse's productivity .

Are notebook prices plummeting ?

Over the last 18 months or so, we have watched our suppliers slash prices repeatedly on  notebooks , according to Forbes in an article published in October of 2009 [in the middle of the financial crisis]  "There has never been a better time to buy a notebook computer. Laptop sales are booming. Unit sales of traditional, full-featured consumer notebook computers rose 13% during the second-quarter compared to the corresponding period a year ago, according to tech tracker IDC.Factor in netbooks, and prices are falling even faster. The cheap, stripped-down machines now comprise 26% of all notebook sales, up from 21% the year earlier. Netbooks typically sell for just over $400, compared to more than $900 for traditional notebooks."

Well almost 2 years on ..... and the prices are still falling !
