| Trauma Centres |
During 2005 the Rotary Club of Durban, Umhlatuzana worked with Prof Peter Stewart, a member of the Rotary Club of New Forest in southern England, to apply for a grant to create various Trauma Centres in Durban, for which funding was provided by New Forest and Verwood Clubs in the UK.
The Centers are based throughout Durban, at various police stations and are manned by volunteers from the community. Volunteers are trained in first aid, counselling techniques, basic criminal law, and how to access social and community services. The Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana is now running its 3rd Trauma Training weekend on the 18th, 19th and 20th November 2011 at Tugela on the North coast.
As well as working with the Trauma Centres set
up by our club, the Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana had broadened the Trauma Training to all Trauma Centres in Durban.
Below are a few pictures of the Ntuzuma and Inanda Trauma Centres which were recently visited by Past President Denzil Goodhead and Rotarian Dumisani Ndlela as part of a fact finding mission.

| Diabetes SA presents trophy |
Diabetes and its complications cause more deaths world wide than AIDS! One of Umhlatuzana's Community Services projects is to support the S.A.Branch of Diabetes World Wide.
Recognizing this, Diabetes S.A. presented a floating trophy to the Rotary Club in District 9270, that signs up the most new members to Diabetes S.A. in a Diabetes year i.e.from November to November.
Here John Andersen, for whom the cup is named, presents the cup and a miniature to Past President Pat Rickard. Umhlatuzana has run a Diabetic Expo at the Windermere Center for 3 years in a row. This sparked the idea of recognizing their sterling service to diabetics by presenting a floating trophy. Added to this is the exciting prospect of District 9270 being part of
the planned Annual Diabetes Global Walk in future.
Details of the plans for next year's walk will appear here as they develop. WATCH THIS SPACE and start getting involved with this rewarding project!

Article Published in the Independent on Saturday Newspaper on the 26th of November 2011:
Young gun to lead first 'corporate club' as part of initiative to revive flagging membership.
At just 29, Mamello Liphoto is young and ambitious, but her heart remains rooted in philanthropy. This makes her the perfect choice as president of the first Corporate Rotary Club on the continent, at a time when the philanthropic organisation is shaking off its reputation as an old white man's club. "Rotary has always been known as a white-male, white-headed organisation," she said. "That's gone now, because we realised we were losing members and not attracting enough new ones." It was no longer the case that one had to be over 30 to join, she
said. And "young people can make a difference".
Liphoto, whose day job is human resources manager at Nedbank, added: "Older people are dying and we have now had a reality check and realised we need to draw in young people." Rotary district governor nominee Greg Cryer said the organisation had embarked on a drive to increase its membership, which had been static for seven years. His idea of establishing a "corporate club" to target younger members was accepted as a blueprint for growth at the Rotary International conference in Mauritius. "Most Rotary clubs have a meeting every week, and it is difficult for young executives who have careers and families, so we thought we would form a Rotary club that would support the busy executive," Cryer said.
"They meet early at
7.30am so that they can be back at their desks by 8.30am." And so the rather different "corporate" Kingsmead Rotary Club was born in an attempt to raise South African membership from 25 000 to 35 000 in three years. Rotary has 32 000 clubs with 1.2 million voluntary members globally.
"It is the first corporate club in Africa and may well be the first corporate club in the world," Cryer said. "We approached Nedbank, and CEO Mike Brown has endorsed it and asked if they could act as the catalyst for us to try this formula. They have bought in and? invited their corporate clients, so it becomes a vibrant network of corporate people.
"It gives Rotary the opportunity to attract a lot of younger people, and because they all communicate on Twitter and Facebook they don't need
to meet as often as a normal Rotary club."
He said it also presented the opportunity for companies to use Rotary as a conduit for their corporate social investments into local areas. Percy Govender, president of the sponsoring Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana, said the move was intended to attract a wider membership base, which was traditionally confined to the suburbs. "All the money that comes to Rotary doesn't go to anything but the projects," Govender said. "As with other charities, a percentage is spent on admin, but we simply act as conduits. For example, if a community needs water we will drill a borehole. We do all self-help projects - we don't give people a fish but a rod.
"When there were floods this week, 49 clubs in our district got together to help all the
people that were homeless and had their homes washed away. We put together blankets and food, and sent it to them in a couple of hours."
The new club meets at Nedbank Kingsmead, opposite the ICC, and the plan is to roll out other clubs across the country.
To contact Liphoto, call her at 082 881 1372, or write to her at mamellol@nedbank.co.za or michellebark@nedbank.co.za. Meanwhile, Durban has won the bid to host the Rotary World Conference at the International Convention Centre in 2019. Cryer said it was the first time in the 107 years of the club's history that the conference would be held in Africa. He said the event would be as big as Cop17, attracting an estimated 20 000 delegates from around the
world. | |
