Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana
Diabetes Day - Windermere Centre 13th November 2010
Our Diabetes Day was another special community service experience for Umhlatuzanians. Members set up the tables and screens and put up all the many colourful, informative posters, some in English and some in Zulu. Thank you to Jocelyn from Windermere Centre for making space available to us for free . At times there were people queuing up to have their sugar levels tested and we eventually lost count of how many tests the two wonderful sisters did. Thanks go to Jenny Russell of Diabetes S.A. for the loan of glucometers and providing lancers and strips, and Mitchell Park Pharmacy for providing additional lancers and strips when we had run out.

Second Trauma Training weekend 26, 27 and 28th November 2010
During 2005 we worked with Prof Peter Stewart, (a Past President of this Club and now a member of the Rotary Club of New Forrest in southern England) to apply for a matching grant to assist Montclair Victim Support Centre. Funding was provided by New Forrest and Verwood Clubs in UK, with help from their District (D 1110). The Centres are based at police stations all over Durban and are manned by volunteers from the community. At the Trauma training weekend, 24 volunteers were trained in first aid, counselling techniques, basic criminal law, and how to access social and community services. The centres provide an understanding and friendly atmosphere for the volunteers to assist victims of crime, abuse and neglect. The matching grant seeks to improve equipment and facilities as well as the training, travelling and out of pocket costs of the volunteers who do not receive a salary for their time worked.

Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana Bosberaad 27 & 28th November 2010

A bosberaad was held at President Wally's Adventure Camp which is situated on the Tugela River. The members met to discuss the way forward for the Club for the next six months, discussing important matters such as where funds should be allocated for projects. 15 Club members and families gathered for the weekend which began with a braai. Thanks to the Silver Bullet (AKA Andre Potgieter) and Alan Longhurst for buying, transporting and cooking the Sheep for all the members and their families. Also many thanks to President Wally for making his adventure camp available for the Rotary members for the weekend.
