Alistair Abell & KG GovenderKG, Pat, Alistair, Richard & GregThe induction of new Club President Alistair Abell took place on the 18th of July 2009 at the Royal Natal Yacht Club. Alistair takes over the reins from KG Govender for the period 2009/10. The event was attended by Assistant District Governor Greg Cryer and his lovely wife Lyndsay.

The occasion was also an ideal opportunity to present Paul Harris awards to five Rotarians who have selflessly contributed their time and efforts to Rotary over the years.

The esteemed Paul Harris is one of the highest honors Rotary can bestow upon a person and is awarded to individuals who have made their mark by being committed to serving the community and showing outstanding dedication to Rotary and its cause (“SERVICE ABOVE SELF"). We congratulate the following Rotarians on their fantastic achievement: Gary Galanos, Monique Labat, Ernie Matthis, Richard Naidoo and Pat Rickard.

KG Govender

Well done to Past President KG Govender for leading our Club successfully for the year of 2008/9. With KG's guidance, we have accomplished a lot throughout the past twelve months. These achievements include support to the KwaDabeka Comfort Centre, Duff's Road School, providing dictionaries to Talk English, the St. Patrick's Day fundraiser, Northwood teambuilding for several schools and the2-Rander scheme for the underprivileged. Thank you, KG!

Projects
2-Rander at Checkers Umhlanga - Sun 14 June 2009 & Checkers Windermere - Saturday 27 June 2009
We simply offered shoppers R2 to contribute toward the purchase of any non-perishable food items for the under-priveleged. The response was phenomenal, with many shoppers being extremely generous and often returning the R2 to us!
The Club raised 12 trollies of groceries with an estimated value of R12,000 from just R400 investment from the Club!
Main recipients of the food parcels from the 2 Trolley-Drives:
- Mothwa Haven
- Mothwa Haven Frail Care
- Verulam Frail Care
- Chatsworth Hospice
- Bongimfundo Primary School
- St.Monica's Children's Home
- Jolivet (Inqanawe Social Care Centre)
- Thembalihle Creche (Inanda)

Youth Projects
EarlyAct Leadership/team-building Course
The event was held on Saturday, the 20th of June at the lower campus of Northwood High School from 8.00am to 2.30pm. Three EarlyAct clubs participated - Northwood Primary (our club); St Catherine's (Empangeni) and Winston Park Primary. A total of 27 children from grades 6 and 7 attended. The event was sponsored by the club (fully in the case of our club, Northlands Primary, and over 50% of the cost per child being sponsored for the other two clubs) The course was run/managed by Eduventures Group (TVG), which is managed by Wally Pelser. There were three well-trained instructors who conducted the course which was made of numerous exciting and fun team-building and leadership-orientated activities, which kept the EarlyActors very active and interested. The children appeared to have learnt a lot at this course, and there was good intermingling and fellowship/friendships developed between the three clubs. Hopefully the Chelsea EarlyAct club will be able to attend next year. This could well become an annual event. A huge thanks to Des McCormack and Johnna of Umhlanga City Lodge for organizing the lunches and refreshments (hotdogs, sandwiches, apples, fruit juice) free of charge.

Fellowships
St. Patrick's Day
St.Patrick's Dinner St.Patrick's Dinner St.Patrick's Dinner There was lots of fun and laughter at the recent St. Patrick's Day dinner which was held on 20th March 2009 at Blue Square in Glenwood. The function was for all members and was held as a fundraiser/fellowship for the whole club and their guests. The money raised, just over R5000, is going to be given to Higher Ground, an organization that takes the disabled in SA on holidays.

Fundraising: Milk From Wine
This is a fundraising initiative where we use wine donated from Distell (Mike Trzebiatowsky), which is given to visitors to our club for them to auction at their own clubs and then to repatriate the money to us. We use this money for projects for the needy. We currently have 5 bottles with the recent GSE team from Hong Kong and 1 bottle each with rotarians from the US and Canada.
