2. BACK TO BASICS: By Angelique from Equal Zeal
In order to equip our children with the necessary tools of Emotional Intelligence, there are a couple of honest to goodness facts we need to remind ourselves of - truths that we, as parents are already familiar with, but tend to forget while living in these demanding, fast-paced times.
Basic Fact #1
Each child is unique, precious and should be cherished. Children have to learn to value and accept themselves before they can value and accept others.
HOW? Take every opportunity to encourage plenty of participation in the activities that enhance your child’s strengths and then commend him on his skills.
Basic Fact #2
Failures are merely ideas or actions that do not produce the desired results. All failures are potential learning situations. Children who accept failures and move on will have the resilience they need to cope with life’s ups and downs.
HOW? Teach your child the lesson - that everyone makes mistakes - and that the most important thing, is that we can learn from them. And never be afraid to share your own “mistakes” and the lessons you learned, with your little one. I always give my little clients a Zeal for Life® eraser, which
serves as reminder that mistakes are just opportunities to have fun by trying
again!
Basic Fact #3
Values, priorities, needs and ideals are dynamic and change over time. Children have to learn to make the right decisions and to consider the options, based on the facts and feelings of themselves and others.
HOW? Teach your child how to look at situations from different points of view that is, to walk in someone else’s shoes; to consider different possibilities (“Let’s see which works best”); and to do things differently (“Find 2 ways to fold your shirt neatly”). This will assist your child in being more flexible; and in developing empathy for others.
Basic Fact #4
Children need to recognise the connection between rights and responsibilities.
HOW? When formulating rules within your family, ensure that the rules are consistent and understood by all family members. Explain to your child that your home is like a spaceship, where everyone has a duty to perform in order for the journey into space to run smoothly and that should someone break a rule, the entire crew is affected.
Basic Fact #4
Children should be able to identify their own needs; as well as being able to o satisfy them. They should know that their feelings are OK and that they can trust them.
HOW? Be a role model for your child. Toss out that old saying: “Do as I say and not as I do”. Be what you want your child to be so that he may live a well-balanced and happy life.
Uh huh, now you remember them! See? All it takes is a little reminder of these little truths in order for
us to get back on track. All the ZEAL in the world to you and enjoy the school holidays with your child!
‘Til next time!
3. INSPIRATION:
Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul. Democritus
People with many interests live, not only longest, but happiest. George Matthew Allen
In the hopes of reaching the moon men fail to see the flowers that blossom at their feet. Albert Schweitzer
Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities. Aldous Huxley
