2.  HELP! I WANT MY CHILD TO HAVE EQ TOO!

We are very privileged to have an article written by a Local children’s life coach – Angelique Victor from Equal Zeal:

Emotional Intelligence: It is the ability to identify and name your emotions (self-awareness), control your feelings (self-regulation), motivate yourself, recognise and understand the emotions of others (empathy) and being able to handle relationships in a socially acceptable way (social skills).

We live in the day and age where parents strive to give our children the best of everything so that they may live “happy” lives.

Every attempt and effort is made to develop our children’s intellectual abilities and we spend unbelievable amounts of time and money on extramural activities, ranging from pottery to horse riding lessons.  While these are all wonderful opportunities to enrich our children and each of these have their merits, what are we doing to prepare our children for life itself?

What will you teach your child about dealing with stress, anger and grief?  How will your child handle himself in the face of disappointment or danger?
Every parent wants a well-balanced child who is happy and motivated to succeed.  However, these coping strategies and attributes do not come naturally.  They are human skills that need to be taught.

And when we, as adults, find it difficult to face these challenges on a daily basis, how do we cope?  Are we equipped to deal with them effectively?  If not, how do you think your child is going to learn these skills?  Children learn from what they see and hear, so the example we set for them is extremely important.  The way you manage your own feelings, and how you react to others people’s feelings will ultimately affect your child’s behaviour.  The secret is to respond and not react!

If you can succeed at improving the emotional intelligence within your family, you can be assured that you will all be better equipped to cope with whatever curve-ball life throws at you.

Start preparing your child for life today…

  • Tonight during story time - before you tuck your little one into bed - use the story your child has chosen to build his own self-awareness.  If you recognize feelings within the story, it’s a good idea to stop and explore these with your child.  Questions like “What do you think this person/character is feeling?” or “Why do you think he became upset?” or “How would you feel?” are some questions you might want to ask. You can then explore how the “feelings” were resolved or not resolved and what suggestions your child may have. Your child’s response to the questions may depend on his age, so be patient.
  • Children love to hear stories from your childhood.  Share your experiences, how you felt and how you dealt with them.  Don’t be tempted to leave out your “mistakes”.  This teaches your child the lesson that everyone makes mistakes and that the most important thing is that we can learn from them.

 More on EQ next time…

3.  INSPIRATION:

“When it seems impossible, when it seems like nothing is going to work, you’re usually just a few millimeters away from making it happen.” – Anthony Robbins

I was watching the video in which Anthony Robbins conveys this message and the crux of the point was that we just need to make a conscious decision, to train our mind and body to act in certain way i.e. if we wish we were more confident he said we need to act like we are, by raising our chests and voice in confidence and convey the message we want to get across.  Then to stay in this state of mind and body and by repetitively doing this we will start walking and talking like we always wanted to.

So the challenge is to tune into what we really want to be and start acting out our dreams for our life and they should come into being………… let’s try this today starting in a very small way, even if it is to just smile when you usually don’t and see people’s reactions to your changes.
