Daily Word – Friday 19 December 2008

Jesus wept! (John 11:35)

 Yesterday Bernard challenged us all to think of the real reason we celebrate Christmas. But Christmas can be a very emotional time, with not only the material pressures that are placed on us, but also it is a time of reminiscence, a time when we often think of loved ones that are no longer with us. And often many tears are shed, tears of pain as well as tears of joy. I wept this week when I suddenly realized that this would be my first Christmas without my mother.

Grief is a very real thing and we don’t stop loving people because they have left this earth. Sometimes the grief we feel, at this time of the year, can be because of lost opportunities or lost relationship; feelings of loneliness or the fear of what the coming year may bring.

As Christians we are often led to believe that we shouldn’t have any negative feelings; that we should be able to rise above everything that gets thrown at us, with a smile on our faces. 

Well I am here to tell you that Jesus wept, and if it was ok for Jesus, then it’s ok for me and its ok for you too.

Yes, this is a time to think about the real reason we celebrate, but if this time of the year holds memories that bring tears to your eyes, then that’s fine too, and never forget that He loves you whether on top of the world or broken hearted!
