Daily Word – Thursday 11 December 2008

Galatians 2:17-18

Have some of you noticed that we are not yet perfect? (No great surprise, right?) And are you ready to make the accusation that since people like me, who go through Christ in order to get things right with God, aren't perfectly virtuous, Christ must therefore be an accessory to sin? The accusation is frivolous. If I was "trying to be good," I would be rebuilding the same old barn that I tore down. I would be acting as a charlatan.

If Paul realized that he couldn’t be perfect, why do we constantly feel that we have to be perfect?

Gods Word tells us that if we say we are without sin we lie, and let’s be honest, we all falter in some way each and every day. Just think of how proud we would be if we could walk in perfection in this world; we would become so super-spiritual that we would be no earthly good.

Whether we like it or not our frailty produces humility, and keeps us aware of the fact that we can only truly grow and overcome though Christ, and not through our own efforts. So the real question is ‘why, knowing that we are changed and transformed through Christ, do we continue to try and build ourselves up using the old foundations of self-sufficiency?

The answer? Pride, for deep within the corrupt heart of man still lurks the desire to be able to stand up and say, ‘look who I am and what I have achieved’! When we do this, we deny Christs work in our lives and so set ourselves up for a fall.

This is not to say that we shouldn’t try, in Christ, to do and be our best, but we need to remember that God will share His glory with no man.

So today, let us gratefully acknowledge that the best of us is that which the presence of the Holy Spirit has produced in us, and then continue to grow through grace!
