Daily word Tuesday 12th January 2010

But God is faithful [to His Word and to His nature] and He can be trusted!   1 Corinthians 10:13

Yesterday I was pondering about the word ‘faith’ and thought about how much ‘faith’ we demonstrate in the things around us that cannot be seen or often even understood. For example we wake up each day with the faith that when we turn the light switch on, the room will light up, and yet we can’t see the electricity supplying the power.

Likewise and even more complex is how we so readily accept and demonstrate ‘faith’ in the fact that we can punch a number into a mobile phone and speak to someone on the other side of the world, and yet we can neither see or feel the technology that provides this service and most of us don’t really understand how it even works.

There are hundreds of things in our daily lives that we have ‘faith’ in – things that we don’t doubt for a moment will work for us – things we don’t understand the workings of, but believe because we experience the results and written explanations of  the people ‘in the know’. DNA is a very good example of something we cannot see or feel and yet we believe in the science of it even though we have no personal experience or knowledge of it.

So the question is, why do we struggle so much with faith in God – we have the written Word of God, the testimonies of thousands of peoples through the centuries who have experienced God in so many ways and yet we still struggle.

We don’t have to see God or feel Him to prove His existence and we don’t have to understand His love for us in order for it to be a reality in our lives. We just have to accept it and open our hearts to receiving it.

Let’s face it if you don’t switch on the light, the room will remain dark, and if we don’t open ourselves to Gods love, our hearts will remain in the dark and our lives incomplete.

So I know that if I can trust in something as simple as a light switch, I can trust in the God Who empowers the universe.
