Daily Word – Friday 16 October 2009

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." [Matthew 11:28-30 The Message]

I love the words ‘unforced rhythms of grace’; they make me think of the rhythm of softly lapping waves on a beach or the gentle rhythm of soft music.

They make me think of my childhood when I curled up in my mothers’ arms and listened to the soothing rhythmic sounds of her heartbeat, and the rhythms of my children’s breathing when I held them as babies.

Each and every one of us can remember experiencing beautiful rhythms that sooth and calm the soul, and each and everyone of us can experience the rhythms of Gods grace; rhythms that gently restore the tired and weary; rhythms of grace that bring peace that surpasses all understanding, and rhythms of grace that lead, not with a rod of religious expectation, but with an outstretched hand of mercy and love.
