SEXUAL HARASSMENT ISSUES:

What You Should Know (see the answer at bottom of this page)

Are you or your company committed to creating a safe environment for all employees?

Educating everyone about sexual harassment is the best way to ensure it doesn't exist in your workplace.

Sexual harassment can take many shapes and forms and we want to make everybody,

and that also means you,  aware that sexual harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

What is Sexual Harassment?

  • Unwelcome propositions or request for sexual activity
  • Unwelcome sexual comments about a person's body, clothing, anatomy or looks
  • Unwelcome spread of sexual rumours
  • Displaying sexually suggestive pictures, drawings, cutouts, ornaments, figurines or other objects
  • Touching or rubbing oneself in a sexually suggestive manner
  • Unwelcome sexual notes, stories, jokes "kidding" or other language

You should remember that while persons may be attracted to one another, their actions or expressions may not be invited or welcome. The rule of thumb is to remain sensitive to the other person's feelings and attitude, and respect their wishes regarding personal interaction. Sexual harassment can occur between opposite genders, the same gender, the same age group, or very differing ages.

REMEMBER: ANYONE can be a victim of sexual harassment.

What to do if you are the target of sexual harassment.

There are several steps you can take if you are the target of sexual harassment.

If you feel safe and comfortable doing so, tell the harasser that his or her behaviour bothers you and that you want it to stop.

Report it.  Tell someone you trust in your school or at work who will take action to stop the sexual harassment.  Keep telling until the sexual harassment stops.  Tell the people closest to you.

Keep written records of the incidents:  what happened, when, where, who else was present, and how you reacted.  Save any notes or pictures you receive from the harasser.  Give these to a supervisor, parent, principal or trusted adult.

Sexual harassment is WRONG!

Protect yourself and those around you to make your workplace a safe place to work.
