GLASS NEWS ONLINE – Issue 18 – 20 April 2011

THE CLEAR VOICE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN      GLASS INDUSTRY

Proudly brought to you by:

Dear Customer,

It’s hard to believe the first quarter of 2011 has come and gone. Easter is here! (And so are the chilly winter mornings!) – especially in the Factory!

I would like to wish all our Christian customers a very Happy Easter and enjoy all the holidays! (although not great for business)

Please note all McCoy’s Glass branches are open on all normal working days over the Easter break. We will however be closing at 14h00 on Thursday 21 April 2011.

Remember to drive with your lights on! As Leaders in Glass we support the Lead SA campaign to lead by driving with your lights on and saving lives. Advise all your delivery teams and installation crews; let the glass industry lead – Drive with your lights on!

STOP WASTING GLASS

Only a very small amount of building glass, especially laminated glass is re-cycled, most goes to landfill. How can we stop this? Recently we met with an Architect who was unaware of this fact and thought all off-cuts were recycled – well, they are not! The best way to bring down this waste is to design windows that create minimum waste and utilise the optimum sheet size! We need to educate our industry on this point! Spread the word – ‘Design to maximum yield of sheet’ – it’s good for the supplier, the installer, the consumer and the environment.

Any other ideas on eliminating waste of glass or ideas on recycling, please pop me a mail and we will share it with the industry

ENERGY SAVING GLASS – AT LAST!

Our recent launch of ESG (Energy Saving Glass) was a major success. We have received a lot of positive feedback from our customers, developers and architects. There is an obvious demand for the product and a huge opportunity for all our customers to benefit in supplying this value added product! – Why is it a ‘winner’? Because good for us, good for our customers, good for the consumer and good for the environment. In true McCoy’s style – a win, win, win for all parties concerned. This is the glass that saves energy and money!

For samples and brochures email us at : martin@mccoysglass.co.za. Thank you to all our readers for the positive feedback and response received,  we are overwhelmed!

IS LOW E SUITABLE FOR SINGLE GLAZING – WITH COATING EXPOSED?

Yes, as long as the Low E is a hard coat – called pyrolytic coating. Some manufacturers produce a soft coated Low E, which can easily be scratched or damaged, and potentially it can deteriorate with exposure to air giving the product a limited shelf life.

Important : Please note : McLam Energy Saving Glass uses a Low E glass, that is a pyrolytic Low E (hard coat).

The coating is as hard as the glass. The product has been developed in partnership with manufacturers of the Low E (Pilkington). You must specify McLam Energy Saving Glass, to avoid cheap imitations that will not perform the same!

The new Glass Expo Steering Committee has the following members:

Hermann Rolfes               :          Wispeco

Afam Ike                            :          Lisec

Should you require any info or input on the Expo, please contact any of the above individuals. The time has come for all parts of our industry to work together in order to leverage advantages and grow as an industry.

SAGGA GOLF DAY RAISES MONEY FOR CHARITY

At the recent AAAMSA golf day, McCoy’s Glass raised R1960.00. This has become a tradition for the past few years where each golfer going through the McCoy’s Glass hole donates towards a charity. Whoever gets nearest the pin, nominates the charity.

This year Ulrich Van Schoor from All Round Glass got nearest the pin and nominated Compass in Edenvale.

Thank you all for your support!

Clearly yours,

Steve McCoy
