DAILY WORD – WEDNESDAY 29^TH OCTOBER 2008

DO YOU EVER FEEL ALONE IN THE WORLD?

The Lord has been speaking to me about spending more time with Him and trusting Him more, and today I read Psalm 118:10 where David says “All the nations surrounded me, [but armed] with the name of the LORD, I defeated them. “

God has given us His name to use, and armed with His name, no-one can defeat us.

Very often, when things don’t go the way we want it to, we feel alone in the world.

Remember that the Lord said He will never leave us or forsake us, yet often we feel alone, that no-one cares about us, that we are forsaken. When I feel like that, I remember and think about the poem by Mary Stevenson in 1936 called “Footprints in the Sand” about when I am alone, and one set of footprints is when He carried me.

         One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.

             Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

                  In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.

                       Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,

                           other times there were one set of footprints.

                                  This bothered me because I noticed

                                that during the low periods of my life,

                             when I was suffering from

                         anguish, sorrow or defeat,

                     I could see only one set of footprints.

          So I said to the Lord,

      "You promised me Lord,

         that if I followed you,

             you would walk with me always.

                   But I have noticed that during

                          the most trying periods of my life

                                 there have only been one

                                       set of footprints in the sand.

                                           Why, when I needed you most,

                                          you have not been there for me?"

                                 The Lord replied,

                          "The times when you have

                  seen only one set of footprints in the sand,

          is when I carried you."
