Daily Word – Wednesday 17 January 2007

Acts 7:42-43

Then God turned away from them and abandoned them to serve the stars of heaven as their gods! In the book of the prophets it is written,

‘Was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings during those forty years in the wilderness, Israel? No, you carried your pagan gods— the shrine of Molech, the star of your god Rephan, and the images you made to worship them. So I will send you into exile as far away as Babylon.’

This may seem like a strange scripture for the daily word, but maybe occasionally we need to do a stock take of our lives to check that we haven’t unwittingly bought any ‘idols’ into the ‘house’.

Now you may find the idea of having ‘idols’ in your life ridiculous, but how often do you, when reading the paper or a magazine, take a sneak peek at the horoscopes. Or maybe you had your palm, tarot cards or tea leaves read at a local church fete, just for fun.

Here in Africa I am saddened at the amount of African Christians I encounter who believe that they can worship both Jesus and their ancestors; but even more saddened by those of us who continue to attempt to serve both Almighty God and the ‘mighty I’, totally unaware of our self-love.

The cultures of today have as many, if not more, false gods than in biblical times, and our ‘idols’ can be anything from astrology to the car in the garage; all I know is, that I don’t want anything in my life, that may exile me from the Throne Room of God.  Do you?
