Daily Word – Monday 11 September 2006

But He's already made it plain how to live, what to do,
   what God is looking for in men and women.
It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor,
   be compassionate and loyal in your love,
And don't take yourself too seriously—
   take God seriously.  [Micah 6:8]

Ever been told that you take yourself too seriously? This, as Christians, is something we all tend to do; we think that as representatives of Christ our attitude, actions and presentation should always be ‘perfect’. We become obsessed with our faults and failures, believing the lie that we’ve let God down and subsequently can’t possibly be an effective witness for Him.

Taking ourselves too seriously is taking on the responsibility of making ourselves Christlike, striving in our own strength for our perception of ‘spiritual perfection’.  In contrast to this, taking God seriously, is believing that He is working in our lives, that He is changing us, and that He will never give up on us saying, ‘well this one is a lost cause’.

We can take God and His promises seriously! We can take His grace and love for us seriously! We can take His commitment to us seriously, and we can take His destiny for us seriously!

So today, don’t take yourself so seriously; throw your head back and laugh with joy, for you are held in The Palm of The Hand of ‘The One’ that created the universe!
