Daily Word – Wednesday 7 June 2006

You weren’t lying to us but to God. [Acts 5:4]

This verse is from the story of a man called Ananias and his wife Sapphira. This story warns us about being deceitful and dishonest.

They sold some property and when handing over the money to the apostles, they claimed it was the full amount they had received. They thought nobody would know that they have kept some money for themselves. They were sure they would get away with it. They agreed to stick to their story. They forgot one thing, and that is that God knew what they have done. For God knows everything, He knows what you are thinking before you even thought about it yourself.

They were foolish and tested God. Peter even went back to Sapphire a second time, giving her a chance to be truthful, but she was deceitful once again. God didn’t let them get away with their evil desires and they were severely punished.

And Peter said, ‘How could the two of you even think of doing a thing like this – conspiring together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Just outside that door are the young men who buried your husband, and they will carry you out, too.’ Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. [Acts 5:9,10]

You can never get away with being deceitful. You may think that you are unnoticed by man, but God notices you. God will punish those who indulge in their deceitful ways.

Our God is a God of honesty – let us be trustworthy children of God!
