DAILY WORD – FRIDAY 31 MARCH 2006

How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart. Psalm 119:2

WHAT ARE WE SEEKING?

Yesterday I was challenged by the word ‘seek’ and the question what are we seeking.

When we have a need, do we seek the provision or the Provider? I pondered on this, thinking of the many times I had bought my ‘shopping list’ of needs and desires to the Lord, quickly pouring out all my concerns, wanting speedy answers and solutions.

Suddenly I realized how easily we can fall into a trap of seeing our God as some kind of ‘divine sugar daddy’ just waiting to ‘dish out the goods’ at our first cry for help; and then, when what we want doesn’t just ‘fall from the sky’, we get discouraged and wonder why God isn’t listening, or if He still loves or cares about us at all.

And my conclusion? That somewhere, when this happens, we need to realize that we have totally ‘lost the plot’. Think about it for just a moment, if any of us were to go and knock on the door of a neighbor we don’t have a relationship with, and ask that person to provide us with -- say – our rent money, they would probably look at us as if we had gone completely mad, their response being ‘I don’t even know you, why would I want to pay your rent?’ and yet isn’t that exactly what we do to God sometimes – rush into His presence like making a quick visit to the local shop, and then expect Him to just ‘deliver the goods’. No! The truth is that giving and receiving are inherently based on relationship!

Yes our God longs to bless us, but he longs for us to know Him first and foremost, He longs for us to want to spend time in his presence being infused with everything of Himself. He wants us to experience His Heart for us and not just His provision, and if we are honest we know that when our lives are centered on our relationship with Him, our circumstances no longer have the power to ‘wipe us out’ but rather we experience that divine peace that truly surpasses all understanding.

So today, let’s take a moment to look within ourselves and ask the question what am I seeking?

SEEK ‘THE GIVER’ NOT ‘THE GIFT’

Much love
