DAILY WORD – THURSDAY 01 DECEMBER 2005

BUT THANKS BE TO GOD, WHO IN CHRIST ALWAYS LEADS US IN TRIUMPH AND THROUGH US SPREADS AND MAKES EVIDENT THE FRAGRANCE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD EVERYWHERE.

(2 CORINTHIANS 2:14)

When we remain in Christ, God always leads us into triumph and we become a sweet smelling fragrance, the evidence of the knowledge of God (our intimate relationship with Him) everywhere we go.

Think how pleasant it is to walk past a person who is wearing a lovely perfume or aftershave, or how easy it is to remember a warm summers evening with the air filled with the fragrances of flowers. Think about the fact that when we enjoy a fragrance we automatically breathe more deeply in order to savour every last moment of the sensation that the fragrance brings to us.

Our living in Christ, our constant intimate walk with our Lord and saviour, produces a spiritual fragrance that has the power to captivate all those around us leaving them longing for what we have.

This world is full of the smell of death and destruction. Everywhere we turn we encounter wounded, broken people, spiritually dead, wearing the clothes of the grave and covered with the stench of the rot of the world. But even worse than this is the thought that we too, as children of God, can still ‘stink’ if we cling on to the ways and attitudes of the world. When we harbour hate and unforgiveness in our hearts, or walk in pride and self-righteousness, thinking of ourselves as too ‘holy’ to mix with certain ‘others’, and pronouncing our own opinionated judgement  over their lives, make no mistake we ‘stink’.

Just think of how repelled we are by a person who has not bathed in days and smells awful. Our immediate response is to turn away from the smell as quickly as possible. We certainly don’t want to stay and chat and we defiantly don’t want to ‘smell’ the same.

So the question today?

What do you smell like?   Are you clothed as Gods own chosen representatives, fragranced by the beauty of His abiding, loving presence, or do you still ‘smell’ like the world with all its judgement and bigotry!
