DAILY WORD – FRIDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2005

FOR IT IS BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED, THROUGH FAITH – AND THIS IS NOT FROM YOURSELVES, IT IS A GIFT OF GOD – NOT BY WORKS, SO THAT NO ONE CAN BOAST. (EPHESIANS 2:8-9)

So often we make the mistake of thinking that good works equals spirituality. But the reverse is actually true, it is our spirituality (our believing on, and abiding in our Lord Jesus Christ) that produces good works. Our works don’t get us closer to God, our relationship with Him does!

Works unmotivated by the Holy Spirit lead to frustration, exhaustion and a general feeling of ‘wading through glue’. Religion will trap us into a cycle of never ending works in an attempt to make us feel worthy of Gods love. The truth is that nothing we ever do in the flesh will make us worthy of His love, and that’s the point, we know that the Word tells us He loved us before we ever loved Him.

When will we realize that He doesn’t want our works, He wants our hearts. I can hear you saying ‘but the Word says that faith without works is dead’, and yes that’s true, but the works spoken about here are works produced by our faith and not works trying to produce faith.

Jesus said we were to take His Yoke as it is light and not burdensome, and when the works we do for our Lord flow from our relationship with Him, they are works done with joy and an ease that comes from the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.

 So today, let His grace bring you into His presence, then stay awhile and worship. Worship the God of the universe who has loved you since the foundation of the world. Let His very essence enfold you and captivate you, and after a little while you will arise blessed to be a blessing, and His love and goodness will flow from you. Yes truly then your faith will produce good works.
