DAILY WORD – WEDNESDAY 26 OCTOBER 2005

BUT I TELL YOU LOVE YOUR ENEMIES AND PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU. (MATTHEW 5:8)

Well I think we can all agree this is a command most of us don’t like to obey. The words that tend to automatically go through our minds are things like ‘they don’t deserve forgiveness’ or ‘you have no idea what they did to me’. Well the truth is that this command doesn’t come from any ordinary mortal but from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and He does know what they did and how much it hurt.

What we need to understand is that God does not take some kind of perverse pleasure by wanting us to seemingly reward people with love when they’ve hurt us. No rather it is His unfailing love for us that wants to keep us from unforgiveness, bitterness and hate with all its demonic power to destroy us.

Make no mistake, unforgiveness, bitterness and hate for others rarely affects them on a long term basis, as they usually move on with their lives totally unaware or interested in how we feel about them. But these feelings will harden our hearts turning us away from God, and then open us up to demonic torment.

So why love? Because love connects us to the power of God.

Love, Gods love in us never fails. It not only transforms our lives but has the power to change the hearts of even our enemies.

And why pray? Because pray for those who have hurt us is the only thing that will change the way we feel.

True forgiveness is not a human trait but a divine move of God on our hearts. The truth is that when we make the decision to obey Gods word and forgive, rarely will the feelings of forgiveness be present. Our obedience in praying for our enemies opens the door for God to change, not only our circumstances, but also our feelings.
