Olde'n'New Recitals in Association with The Order of St. John
Dear Music Friends,
SUNDAY
30Th OCTOBER
Anna Wilshire Jones ( Piano) and her Trio / Quartet will be presenting a fascinating programme at the end of October.
Featuring the talents of Allan Thompson (Clarinet), Wessel Beukes (Cello) and Samson Diamond (Violin) there will be two contrasting works performed. First a Piano Trio by Max Bruch and then a Quartet by Olivier Messiaen.
"Bruch's Trio is a highly romantic work, with eight exquisitely composed musical paintings. Beautifully romantic melodies, poignant pianissimos and wrenching climaxes all combine to create an intense and dramatic work. The Eight Pieces are largely in the minor keys, so suitable to the pathos contained in the music. This was one of Bruch’s later works, composed when he was 73.
The Quartet for the end of time was written during world war 2. Oliver Messiaen was in a Nazi prisoner of war camp in France. Along with him were a clarinettist, cellist and violinist. Messiaen first wrote the fourth movement of this work for this trio and later the full eight movements developed into what is now the quartet.
It was a massive project that Messiaen took on, one which allowed him escape from the difficulties of the prison camp. The first performance of it saw prisoners and guards alike united in the excitement and splendour of its performance.
The quartet is based on the book of revelations from the Christian bible and the title of it is a play on words – the end of time as indicated in revelations as well as the end of the time as it had been known in traditionally classical music." ( A. Wilshire Jones)
This is going to be an amazing musical adventure !!!
