Speaker of the Month Hein Wagner
Guts, Glory and Wagner
World speed record holder, adventurer, runner and popular motivational speaker Hein Wagner tells us what drives him.
Blind from birth, Hein Wagner’s very existence takes everything you thought you knew about your own limitations and turns it on its head.
Hein’s Vision Trust works tirelessly to ensure more blind people have access to the technology that allows them to function on a par. Hein himself has a huge Technogym treadmill parked right next to his desk so he can run at home, fingertips on the bar. When he sets out from Cape Town later this year to row around Robben Island solo he will have a custom designed GPS to keep him on course. His telephone and his computer both feature high tech speech recognition software.
His gadgets are impressive but more often than not Hein prefers to rely on state of mind rather than state of the art. He has sailed the Atlantic in the Cape to Rio race with a blind sailor and a deaf skipper. His navigator for both his successful world record speed attempts has a serious stutter. A straight line conquered, the blind guy and his very brave navigator took a private Mercedes on the oldest and, some would say, the most difficult, racing circuit in the country and clocked a time of 2min 22.86 in front of an incredulous TT crowd. (A good average lap for a saloon racing car is just under two minutes.)
He has completed the New York and Hong Kong marathon and in SA he has run the Cape Town marathon as well as a host of half marathons that include the Two Oceans (3 times), SAD, Worcester, Durbanville and Stellenbosch etc.
Plans for the near future year include rowing the English Channel solo and then running 7 marathons on 7 continents (including Antarctica). He is also determined to raise a million pounds for Vision Trust by flying a 747-400 from London to Johannesburg.
Hein Wagner is a person who takes chances against such breathtaking odds that everyone else are persuaded to stop, take stock of their capabilities and then go ahead and dream a little longer and a little harder. He gifts people the vision to believe that they can be capable, not because they are perfectly suited but by virtue of being unstoppably determined.
He is blind. What is your excuse?
