Tool making – what is that? Tool making is the science of designing, manufacturing, fitting and maintenance of all parts that are required in all manufacturing processes. The Department of Trade and Industry and the Tool Makers Association of SA (TASA) researched ways and methods of ensuring that more competent tool makers were trained. The National Tooling Initiative was formed to develop and facilitate this training. The NTI launched the pre-apprenticeship programme for Tool, Die and Mould Makers(TDM) in January 2010. 7 FET colleges in the country were selected to participate in this programme. Umgungundlovu FET College was the only one in KZN to be selected. 25 learners went through a stringent selection process to gain entry into the TDM pre-apprenticeship programme that was
housed at our Plessislaer Campus. 23 of the 25 learners graduated in what can only be described as a most successful pilot programme.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony on the 2nd March 2011, Mr Tapiwa Samanga from the DTI, said that due to the success of this pilot, the Minister of Finance specifically mentioned in the budget speech that the NTI would receive R120 million over the next 3 years. "This is important in terms of money received but even better was the fact the government now sees this as a priority area of skills development", said Mr Samanga. Also speaking at the graduation ceremony, Mr Lance Deysel, Executive Committee member of TASA, said that not only had the learners achieved good results in the theory part of the programme, the sponsor companies were very happy
with the quality of learners that spent 3 months in their employ. He attributed this in part to the stringent selection process. Some results of this programme: Nationally : - 80% pass rate – learners require a minimum of 75% in all modules to pass - 34 sponsor companies were involved Umgungundlovu FET College: - 92% pass rate - Mr Elton Sibiya came second in the country - Ms Ayanda Mtambo came third in the country and was the top female learner in the country - Mr Siyanda Zulu was the most improved
student
In 2011 these learners have registered in the TDM Apprenticeship programme, which will run for 3 years. Some of the learners have already completed some modules towards their trade test. |
