It is with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing of Cornelius Bosch. We have had the
privelege of knowing him for many years now, and has always been known to brighten up our days.
Not only was Cornelius one of South Africa's most talented Artists who will be sorely missed, but, he
was also a Great man. We would like to offer our condelences to all of his family and friends, and
our thoughts are with you at this terribly sad time.
Police spokesman Captain Katlego Mogale said that a burnt body was found by a passerby in Derdepoort, east Pretoria, last Tuesday.
"Police linked [the] body that was found... as that of Mr Bosch after an autopsy matched his dental records," she said.
She added that the autopsy also revealed: "the body had sustained a bullet wound to the head".
Police are "closely" monitoring all trade in Bosch's paintings and a case of murder has been opened.
Bosch, 55, disappeared from his Kameeldrift home. His bakkie and cellphone were missing.
The art website Artween said Bosch described himself as a South African artist working fulltime as a painter for 20 years. His works range from landscapes to abstract paintings.
When Bosch disappeared, his friend and colleague, Hester Carstens, said: "His house is neat and tidy and there are no signs of a struggle. His Bible, toothbrush and other personal items are still at the house. We don't know what could have happened to him. It's very unusual."
Investigating officer Warrant Officer Stephen Joubert said Bosch was last seen by the manager of a gallery.
The alarm was raised when Bosch failed to arrive at several month-end meetings to sign documents at galleries.
"We have gone to his house with forensic investigators but can't find anything amiss. It is tidy. Nothing appears out of place," Joubert said.
